Elements to consider when designing and installing a fountain include:
- The desired slab size and general shape.
- The type of water play desired: calm, intense, suitable for all ages.
- A theme, if desired.
- Available water pressure supplied by the city and quantity in gallons per minute (gpm).
- Size of water inlet.
- Choice of supply only or with installation.
- Type of installation: partial or turnkey (Turnkey means that the entire installation will be handled by a contractor or installer. Partial installation means that the customer will take charge of some of the work, such as excavation and site preparation (with our recommendations), installation of the French drain and sewer connections, installation of site fencing, etc.).
Different types of water features can be envisaged, depending on how the water is managed:
Lost-water water play: All water used in the water play is returned to the storm or sanitary sewer after use.
Recycled water game: Water from the game is collected in a basin where it can be reclaimed to water plants and gardens, or to clean city streets.
Recirculating water play: Water is collected in a basin, treated and then reintroduced into the water play, operating in a similar way to a swimming pool.
The mechanical chamber can be installed in an existing building or in a small building provided by the city, such as a shed (required for a recirculating water feature). It can also be installed in a cabinet or vault. The recommended distance between the mechanical chamber and the water feature is 10 feet, up to a maximum of 30 feet for a recirculating water feature. For a lost-water or recovery water feature, the distance has little impact on the water feature's functionality, but a minimum distance of 10 feet is recommended.
Production times may vary depending on the components and receipt of the purchase order. For buried components, such as structure bases and ground jets, and for water management, lead times are around 4 to 6 weeks. For the structures themselves, lead times are generally between 6 and 8 weeks, and may be extended pending confirmation of color choices by the customer.
The standard delivery time is 8 to 12 weeks after contract award, however, the final delivery time will be confirmed following color selection and receipt of the purchase order.
Winterization and start-up of water features are of paramount importance in terms of maintenance, and have a major impact on the longevity of these installations.
Improper winterization can irreparably damage a water feature. It's essential to ensure that plumbing is properly prepared for winter to avoid ice formation, which can cause cracks in piping under the slab.
Similarly, during start-up, a pressure test must be carried out on the piping before the slab is poured, to ensure that fittings and connections are watertight.
It's crucial to take these maintenance measures seriously to ensure the proper functioning and durability of water features.
Yes, you can add paints or cast-in-place to your concrete surface. Paints can be applied directly to the concrete surface after proper preparation, while cast-in-place involves the application of a liquid or semi-liquid material that hardens to form a new surface. Make sure you choose materials that are compatible with concrete and suited to your aesthetic and functional needs.
When planning a water play project for a daycare center, here are a few things to consider:
Safety: Make sure your water play equipment is designed and installed in compliance with current safety standards, particularly with regard to water depth, non-slip materials, protective barriers, etc.
Space planning: Take into account the size of the space available for the water feature, as well as the configuration of the surrounding area to ensure safe and optimal use.
Themes and appeal: Choose an attractive, child-friendly theme to make water play more engaging and stimulating.
Types of water play equipment: Select the appropriate types of water play equipment according to the age of the children attending the day-care center. Consider interactive water features, fountains, floor jets, etc.
Maintenance: Set up a regular maintenance plan to keep your water feature running smoothly and clean all year round.
Access to water: Make sure you have an adequate water supply to feed the water feature, as well as appropriate drainage systems to remove excess water.
Budget: Establish a realistic budget for the design, installation and maintenance of the water feature, taking into account initial costs as well as ongoing expenses.
By taking these aspects into account when planning your water play project for a day-care center, you'll be able to create a playful, safe and stimulating environment for the children.
It all depends. If the project is on a solid concrete slab with or without cast-in-place, then yes, it's possible to have small structures. However, for a water feature with synthetic turf or cast-in-place, with a gravel installation, this won't be possible, as the structures might lack stability.
